Market Report

We ask leading dealers of historic and contemporary Native American art what their thoughts are on the market and where it might be headed.

Now that we are allowed to open at limited capacity and the restaurants and hotels are opening back up, we are seeing a small but steady resurgence of collectors coming to Santa Fe. We are fortunate to have established artists in our gallery who are internationally known for their craftsmanship and designs. Our clients have been asking for jewelry designed with rare stones and historic pieces by artists such as Lee Yazzie, Charles Loloma and Preston Monongye.

We have been selling a nice selection of Darryl Dean Begay’s cuttlebone pieces in both sterling and 18k gold. Our clients want jewelry they can wear anywhere in the world by artists known for their ability to hold deeply to their traditions yet take their designs to the next level.

I see a lot of artists I think deserve a great deal more attention than they are receiving. One of my favorite young artists is Emmett Navakuku (Hopi). This guy is a triple threat. He is a brilliant jeweler, he is a talented painter, and he is the nicest guy around. Serious collectors already know about Emmett, but I don’t think the average buyer knows his name just yet. He apprenticed for Kenneth Johnson (Muscogee/Seminole) for several years and has been a full-time jeweler for five years. He [participated] in our August show, Celebration of Indian Arts.
