Beginning August 12, Waddell Gallery will be offering stunning pieces of Native American jewelry at a pop-up show lasting five days at the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The Arizona-based gallery, which is known for its high-end jewelry made by many of the country’s best jewelers, has frequently held intimate little pop-up shows in Santa Fe in August, but this will be the first year the show will take place at Anasazi, where owners Gene Waddell and his son, Mike, will set up four jewelry cases to highlight some of gallery’s most exquisite pieces.

“We’ll be in the library at the Anasazi, and it’s a great location right off the Santa Fe Plaza,” says Mike. “We’re bringing some of our very best pieces, including many pieces from the top award-winning artists creating today. We really don’t want to crowd our cases either; it will be a nice showcase on these great pieces.”

Works in the show include Charles Supplee’s gold bracelet with a Hopi Maiden carved in Sea of Japan coral; Jesse Monongya’s gold bracelet with sugilite, Australian opal, coral, lapis and turquoise inlay; Lee Yazzie’s gold ring inlaid with high-grade Blue Gem turquoise, sugilite and Australian opal; and two works by iconic Hopi jewelry designer Charles Loloma, a silver bracelet and a large silver ring, both with inlaid stones.

“We know that some of our clients wait for this show every year so we like to hold some stuff back as it comes into the gallery in the eight or nine months that lead up to the show,” Mike says. “The pieces you’re going to see are going to be made with the highest quality and with the highest-end and rarest stones out there. We help supply our artists with their stones, so when we get one of those high-end pieces of turquoise we like to get it to one of our artists to give us something special.”

They form an attachment to its uniqueness and beauty, whether they are a collector or an occasional buyer,” he says. “What I’m seeing right now is that collectors want high-end collectible jewelry, done by acclaimed silver and gold smiths, who have won awards, as well as new up-and-coming artists.”
