1. Buffalo Barry’s Indian Art
These katsinam are by Oswald White Bear Fredericks (1905-1996). On the left is a Ka’e or Corn katsina, and on the right is a Mana or Hopi Maiden. White Bear Fredericks was the son of noted carver Charles Fredericks and nephew of the renowned Wilson Tawaquaptewa. White Bear was a principle source for Frank Waters’ volume Book of the Hopi. While living in Phoenix he became friends with Senator Barry Goldwater, who was an avid collector of katsina carvings. Sen. Goldwater bought scores of katsinam from White Bear. Eventually Goldwater donated his collection to the Heard Museum, including his White Bear dolls. White Bear was a noted contributor to the tradition of Hopi katsina art.

2. Mark Sublette Medicine Man Gallery
Now available at Medicine Man Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, is this 125-year-old Apache pictorial olla. “This olla from around 1900 celebrates Apache basket making at its zenith,” says gallery owner Mark Sublette. “Multiple figures of dogs, birds, lizards and people fill quadrants of space delineated by rattlesnake designs. The shape and quality of weaving show the mastery of this unknown artist.”
