Artist Focus: Lisa C. Redford (Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara)

Designer Lisa C. Redford is the owner and creator of Inspired by LCR, which consists of contemporary, haute couture, streetwear and statement pieces.

Statement piece from Evolve collection. The graphic design created by the artist depicts significant events in Native American history. One sleeve reads “Evolve” and the other “Still Here.”

“The designs within each piece are created from my own original artwork and graphic design with most pieces being limited editions. Some pieces are created by the repurposing of clothing as well,” Redford says. “My designs incorporate an Indigenous flair with an edgy modern look inspired by my heritage and ancestry which includes Hidatsa and Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw. I am an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes—Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota—on my mother’s side and of Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw heritage on my father’s side, as well as English, Danish and Irish.” Two pieces from the Off the Trail collection. Original artwork in pen and ink, inspired by Eastern Woodland tribes’ artwork and dedicated to the artist’s Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw descendancy. Models: Shealyse Chase and Skye Hall (Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara).

Redford’s Hidatsa name is Awah-Miduah-Qhobadi, or Ground Cedar Woman (creeping cedar). She launched her first collection, Evolve, in 2021. “This collection represented the challenges of the past years with Covid-19 and how our entire world has had to adapt and evolve with the changes,” the designer says. “But beyond that, it represents how Native American and Indigenous people have survived, persevered and ‘evolved’ and are ‘still here’ through all of the atrocities and attempts to extinguish our people.”

The jacket and pants are both repurposed/upcycled one-of-a-kind pieces. The bottoms are a pleather, hand-painted ribbon pant. The pleather jacket has attached colored llama fur and on the back has a pink painted flower. Photograph courtesy Peaks and Valleys Photography. Model: Adyson Davis (Turtle Mountain Chippewa).

The second collection is titled Off the Trail (of Tears), which represents and honors her Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw heritage. Two new collections will be released in August and September.
