An Inviting Atmosphere

The Wheelwright Museum hosts the annual Artists Market and two exhibitions alongside Santa Fe Indian Market.

Much like other art institutions in the Santa Fe area featuring stellar art presentations alongside Indian Market, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian is no exception. Not only does the museum have two spectacular exhibitions currently on display—Always in Relation: Artworks from the Schultz Collection and California Stars: Huivaniūs Pütsiv—but the museum shop, the Case Trading Post, will also run the popular Artists Market.

“This is our third annual market,” says shop manager and market organizer Ken Williams. “The idea for the market happened during Covid, when everything was up in the air, and we thought, ‘We should try to host something here on a smaller, more intimate scale.’”

For the 2023 market, held outdoors on museum grounds, the public can expect another small, yet impactful presentation of work. “There will be 12 booths with around 17 artists in attendance,” says Williams. “Generally, the artists that have been selected or invited have been supporters of the museum in some way, whether long-term artists we’ve carried in the gift shop or have in our collections. However, we also try to make space for emerging artists as well.”

There will be a diverse mix of artworks available, including pottery, katsina carving, jewelry and so much more by talented Native American artists like Yazzie Johnson (Navajo/Santo Domingo/Laguna Pueblo), Robert Tenorio (Santo Domingo Pueblo), Ronald Honyouti (Hopi), Kevin Honyouti (Hopi), Felicia Fragua (Jemez Pueblo), Cippy Crazy Horse (Cochiti Pueblo) and Janice Black Elk Jim (Rosebud Lakota). “There will be a little something for everyone,” Williams notes.

Those attending the market are also encouraged to explore the two previously mentioned museum exhibitions that have proven to be remarkably comprehensive and fascinating. Aways in Relation: Artworks from the Schultz collection, on display through October 21, “features more than a hundred works including jewelry, two-dimensional art, vessels and objects from the estate of Ruth and Sidney Schultz,” explains Wheelwright reps. They also share that the exhibition explores the beginnings of the Schultz’s relationship with the Southwest—forged for Ruth through a love of jewelry, in particular the jewelry of Kenneth Begay. “The exhibit charts the Schultz’s growing appreciation for Indigenous arts, their deep relationships with artists and how this growing passion was part of their dedication to the area,” reads the press release.

The exhibition California Stars: Huivaniūs Pütsiv, which loosely translates to mean “stars with us or around us,” continues through January 14, 2024. “[The exhibition] highlights those landmark First Californian artists whose work across varied media combines to speak about personal experiences, mythology and traditions, and speak to questions of resilience, identity and social justice,” shares the Wheelwright. “The exhibition’s richness in the selection of artists is complemented by the diverse media in which they express themselves, ranging from jewelry and fashion to sculpture, and painting to video.”

The Artists Market will open Friday, August 18, and is a “nice way to start the weekend,” says Williams. “We’re also here Saturday, August 19, during Indian Market, so we know things may be a bit slower, but our main goal is to create an inviting, quaint atmosphere.” The market is a free event, that also offers a food truck from a local Santa Fe owner.
