2023 SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market: From the Director

Honor the Past, Celebrate the Present

This is Santa Fe Indian Market’s 101st year. As we commemorate the first year of the new century, it is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you to this historic gathering of the world’s finest Native American artists.

For more than a century, Santa Fe Indian Market has been an example of Indigenous art and ingenuity, attracting artists from more than 500 tribal nations in the United States and Canada. This remarkable event is a celebration of creativity and an opportunity to showcase the breathtaking richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures. We are fortunate to host the market in Oga Po’o Kweeng (Shell-filled Lake), known as Santa Fe—the ancestral lands and home of the Tewa people.

SWAIA staff and volunteers are working diligently to ensure that this year’s market and trademark events are world-class experiences that delight artists, collectors and visitors. We are especially pleased to announce that 30 percent of this year’s juried artists are new to the market. The tremendous number of new artists speaks to Native arts’ continued trajectory and renewal. New artists from diverse communities permit collectors to discover fresh artistic talent and provide novel opportunities to make meaningful connections.

We are immensely grateful to all our partners who support us in producing the world’s largest Native American art market every year, and we are privileged to continue to present new opportunities for Native art and artists to meet the world. In May 2024, SWAIA, alongside the City of Santa Fe, will produce the nation’s first Indigenous Fashion Week. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that SWAIA’s e-commerce platform has launched in time for this year’s market granting worldwide audiences the ability to discover Native American artists from the comfort of their homes.

As you prepare for your trip to Santa Fe Indian Market, we know this official magazine will help in your planning. Thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey. Together, let us honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape the future of Indigenous art and culture.
