Market Report

We ask leading dealers of historic and contemporary Native American art what their thoughts are on the market and where it might be headed.

In my opinion, the biggest change in recent times has been the shift to online purchases. I believe the Covid shutdowns jumped us forward about 10 years in this process. Meaning we would have gotten here eventually, but the levels of online buying we’re seeing now probably would not have arrived until the late 2020s had it not been for the pandemic. Even now, with most places open once again, we find the walk-in traffic and the face-to-face transactions are well below pre-pandemic levels.

Many old timers who used to tell me they would never buy online, that they had to see it in person, or they didn’t understand the technology, or a dozen other excuses—have learned to shop online over the last two years. And you know what, now that they can come back in person if they wanted, a large portion of them have gotten so used to the convenience of online shopping they don’t come in. I often say that we “trained” them too well over the last two years and now they just sit at home in their pajamas and shop. Out of necessity, a huge shift was made to online shopping and it will never be the same again.
