Photographer: Rashelle CampbellDesigner Evan Ducharme is Metis from the community of St. Ambroise, Manitoba (Treaty 1 Territory) with ancestral ties to the Cree, Ojibwe and Saulteaux people. His work explores Metis history and cultural iconography, subverting colonial notions of gender, queerness and relations to place. His work applies ancestral and contemporary Metis knowledge to affirm a contemporary representation of Indigenous peoples within the fashion medium. This past October, Ducharme was invited to Treaty 6 Territory in Edmonton, Alberta, to participate in AYIWINISA, an evening of Indigenous fashion curated by Cheyenne Rain LeGrande in association with Latitude 53. At the event, he restaged a selection of looks from his past two collections, ATAVISM and PROGENY. This June, Ducharme will debut a new collection at Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto. “Without giving too much away,” says Ducharme, “the collection can be described as a fantastical, queer, multi-epoch study of colonial time that rebukes the narrow ‘settler imaginary.’” —
