Coinciding with the Heard’s 2022 Indian Fair & Market, the Heard Museum Guild returns to honor and showcase the artworks of Native American students in the rebranded 36th annual Youth Art Show and Sale (YSS). From March 5 to 6, American Indian students from around the country, and ranging from 7th to 12th grade, will display their original artworks for sale.

“The first student art show was in 1986,” notes the Heard Museum Guild. “Then and now it encourages emerging, youth artists to showcase their talents in a professional setting…Youth participants submit an array of traditional and fine art, including katsina dolls, pottery, baskets, jewelry, beadwork, weavings, paintings, sculpture as well as unique, contemporary works in creative media.”

In addition, student pieces will be presented to a panel of judges including professional artists, professors, curators and collectors, who will award first, second and third place ribbons for 13 categories and two age divisions. They will also present Best of Show and Best of Division, among other special ribbons. The last event in 2019, awarded Best of Show and Best of Division 2 (Grades 10-12) to Animkeewa Aankwad White Eagle (Ottawa/Kiowa) for his digital illustration work titled Appropriation. Stella Riddle (Sioux) earned Best of Division I (Grades 7-9) for her piece Sandstone.

The guild also notes that due to generous donations, they will be awarding larger than normal cash prizes for this year’s show, totaling a whopping $10,000. After the judging, all student work will be on display in the Heard Museum’s Monte Vista Room. A percentage of sales from the show go back into the guild’s student art programs, while the rest is kept by the students.
Don’t miss out on a unique opportunity to witness the future of Native American art, and support the guild and the Heard with your purchase of any of their one-of-a-kind, original pieces. —
