Discovered Treasures

Santa Fe Art Auction’s spring sale promises significant lots by prominent Native artists in varying media.

Santa Fe Art Auction is thrilled to be featuring more than 350 lots for the Native American-Indigenous Art Sale, giving an exciting start to the new year and auction season. Beginning on February 5, the sale will include historic to contemporary Native American paintings, jewelry, textiles and a large collection of pottery, ranging from miniatures to large storage jars.

“2021 was a banner year for us when it comes to the sales of Native art,” explains Gillian Blitch, president and CEO of the auction house. “Both our fall and summer sales saw world auction records set for artists in all media…Our August sale featured nearly 650 lots and we saw a sell through rate of 90 percent.”Cochiti Pot, circa 1910, 171/8 x 19” Estimate: $40/60,000

Blitch further notes that the spring Native American art sale will be no exception as the auction will include important works from leading artists in the field. “Of course, we benefit from being based in the heart of Santa Fe, the burgeoning epicenter for Native American art in this country,” says Blitch. “With the many institutions located here as well as some of the most dedicated and active collectors, we are fortunate to consistently boast strong offerings across all categories.”Zia Large Polychrome Storage Jar, ca. 1910, fired clay, pigment featuring bird and feather designs on shoulder and body, 16¼ x 18”

Pottery will be well represented in the sale, with a Cochiti Pot, circa 1910, as the top highlight with an estimate at $40,000 to 60,000, along with a Zia Polychrome Storage Jar, circa 1910. “The beautifully designed classic jar boasts an estimate of $12,000 to $18,000,” says Blitch. “Another rare offering is a 13-inch Redware Feather Plate by the famous Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo), estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.”Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso, 1887-1980), Redware Plate with Feather Designs, clay, 2½ x 13¼ Estimate: $10/15,000

Besides pottery, there will be a large selection of American Indian School paintings from the distinguished collection of Doctor Daniel Brackett. “Brackett was a board member at the Fred Jones Museum of Art and was the chair of the Jacobsen House Native Art Center in Norman, Oklahoma,” Blitch says. “The paintings were previously displayed in the David L. Boren Student Union at the OU Health Sciences Center.”

Noteworthy paintings in the collection are from prominent artists such as Jerome Tiger (Muscogee Creek/Seminole), Stephen Mopope (Kiowa), Norma Howard (Choctaw-Chickasaw), Archie Blackowl (Cheyenne), Woody Big Bow (Kiowa), Al Momaday (Kiowa) and Doc Tate Nevaquaya (Comanche).Diné [Navajo] silver and blue Carico turquoise set Estimate: $6/12,000

Another significant acquisition for the sale is a Navajo silver and blue Carico turquoise set, estimated at $6,000 to $12,000. The set includes a squash-blossom necklace, pendant earrings, cuff bracelet and ring.

Santa Fe Art Auction will have a complete catalog of the sale around 10 days before the start of the sale. Items will be on view at auction headquarters in the Santa Fe Baca Railyard District. —
