The Rockwell Museum has recently acquired a suite of 15 prints by Wendy Red Star (Apsáalooke/Crow) for its permanent collection. Titled Accession, the series developed from Red Star’s Native Artist in Residence fellowship at the Denver Art Museum in 2016 and 2017. During this time, the artist used object card catalogs to research the Denver Art Museum’s holding of Native American objects. These records included watercolors depicting items like clothing and personal regalia, with written descriptions included.

“I felt a connection with the artists who created the work, and I was jealous of the time they got to spend with my ancestors’ materials,” says Red Star. “I am amazed by the similarities in the coupling of a photograph of a martingale on my daughter’s parade horse with a WPA artists’ brilliantly crafted drawing of a beaded geometric martingale from the 1930s.”
The Rockwell Museum will feature Red Star’s Accession series during the exhibition Objects in Motion: Wendy Red Star’s Accession Series, running May 28 to September 5. The series will also be a centerpiece for the Rockwell Museum’s annual theme “SPARK! From Inspiration to Creation.”—
