Now available at Sandbar Trading in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is an early 1900s Navajo Female Yei (Deity) weaving wearing a traditional belt and holding a corn stalk and rattle. The six houses depicted in the weaving may have been an interpretation of government housing. This weaving, at 81 by 51 inches, is large for a Yei. “It has elements of the Shiprock and Lukachukai areas. The size makes me believe it [was] woven in the Lukachukai area,” says gallery owner Rick Gottsponer. “Weaving of Yeis began about 1900, making this an early one. Traders in the Gallegos Canyon, Shiprock and Lukachukai areas promoted the weaving of the ‘Mystery-Symbolism’ of the Yei and Yeibechai weavings for the public. This would be a stunning weaving for your entryway.” —
