Featuring some of the most contemporary Native American weavers in the country, a new exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art Santa Fe will highlight cutting-edge artwork that speak to the living and evolving art of weavings.

Woven Futures, Unbound Patterns: Contemporary Diné Weaving, which opens August 13 in Santa Fe, boasts an astounding pedigree: the exhibition is curated by Venancio Aragón with organizational support from Tony Abeyta, and it will feature work from renowned weavers such as Irveta Aragón, Venancio Aragón, Melissa Cody, Calandra L. Cook, Marlowe Katoney, Vera Myers, Mary Lou Schultz, Tyrell Tapaha and others. In addition, works made by students from the weaving department at Diné College in Tsaile, Navajo Nation (Diné Bikéyah), will also be on view alongside loans from the School for Advanced Research and the Tia Collection. The museum notes that the exhibition brings “historic and contemporary works into direct conversation, tracing a lineage across time.”

“Moving beyond historical frameworks shaped by trading posts, static ethnographic framings and external narratives, the exhibition centers weaving as a practice led by the weavers themselves,” according to an exhibition statement. “Diné weaving emerges as an active site of innovation, where material, pattern and process carry forward complex cultural, social and aesthetic lineages. Works by established artists are shown alongside students, positioning emerging weavers as continuations and expansions of Diné knowledge systems, working within and against inherited forms.”
The exhibition will open just in time for celebrations around town during Santa Fe Indian Market. It remains on view through October 11. —
