Auctions

Deep in the Southwest

Morphy Auctions shines a light on art of the West during a major show and auction in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Summers in Santa Fe are popular for many reasons, including the gorgeous weather, festive atmosphere and a trio of arts districts—the Railyard, Santa Fe Plaza and Canyon Road—that offer unique experiences for visitors. For many, though, the real draw is the slice of the Southwest found at many of the galleries, shows and events. One of the great Santa Fe art shows, Morphy Auction’s annual Santa Fe Old West & Native American Art Show & Auction, returns to the city on June 20 and 21.

Maria Martinez (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1887-1980) and Popovi Da (San Ildefonso Pueblo, 1923-1971), San Ildefonso Vase, 9 x 13½ in. Estimate: $10/20,000

Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994), Mother & Child, alabaster, 9¾ x 9½ x 15¾ in. Estimate: $5/10,000

The show contains two major art events smashed together: a live auction with 450 lots and a dealer show with 100 booths. “We have a great collection of auction material and art dealers for the show,” says Cheryl Goyda, show manager. “It’s always fun to put on a show like this in such a great place like Santa Fe.”

Kim Martindale, who is a consultant for the show, notes that it’s rare to have this many art dealers who specialize in Western and Native American materials in a single room together. “Being able to speak to these important dealers and to learn from them has always been a highlight of this show,” Martindale says. “Education is very important to our collectors, and also our dealers and experts.”

Tammy Garcia (Santa Clara Pueblo), Brownware Pottery Bowl, 10½ x 5 in. Estimate: $5/10,000

Harrison Begay (Haashké yah Níyá) (Navajo (Diné), 1917-2012), Untitled, gouache on paper, 14 x 17½ in.

For the sale component, which will start at 5 p.m. on June 20, highlights include a Tammy Garcia brownware bowl (est. $5/10,000), Allan Houser’s alabaster sculpture Mother & Child (est. $5/10,000), and a Maria Martinez and Popovi Da vase (est. $10/20,000). Other auction items are a pair of Kiowa high-top moccasins (est. $3/5,000), a Pahponee etched pot (est. $2/3,000), Harrison Begay’s gouache work Haskay Yahne Yah (est. $1,500/2,500) and other works by Damacia Cordero, Cavan Gonzales (Eagle Tail) and Preston Duwyenie.

Damacia Cordero (Cochiti Pueblo, 1905-1989), Pottery Lizard, 13 x 6¼ x 4 in. Estimate: $400/800

For the dealer show, Martindale says he expects to have around 100 dealers and vendors offering all kinds of materials related to the Old West, Southwest and Wild West. The dealer show runs June 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on June 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is also a five-hour opening event starting at noon on June 19 for ticketed early buyers only. The auction and the dealer show will both take place at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center in downtown Santa Fe. —
