Approximately 500 lots of Native American material will be offered across two Bonhams’ sales this June

This summer, Bonhams will host two sales featuring Indigenous artwork that kick off on June 7 with the online-only sale Modern and Historic Native American Art and culminating in its live Native American Art sale on June 17 in Los Angeles. The online sale closes the following day on June 18.

A Hunkpapa Lakota (Sioux) pictorial muslin depicting exploits of Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka, ca. 1831-1890), with possible attribution to the warrior-artist Four Horns (Heu-Topa, ca. 1814-1886/87), uncle of Sitting Bull. Estimate: $15/25,000

The June 17 sale will feature an estimated 250 lots, with the vast majority by Indigenous makers. Bonhams incorporates non-Native materials into this sale when thematically relevant, in this case, 21 orotone lots by Edward S. Curtis. Another 200 lots will comprise the online sale.

“Collectors can expect wide range of fresh-to-the market offerings, including a stellar selection of Navajo and pueblo jewelry, a selection of historic pottery, and New Mexican retablos from the beautifully curated collection of Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch,” says Bonhams specialist and head of sale Kim Jarand. “The concurrently running online sale will comprise jewelry, pueblo pottery, basketry and much more at more approachable price points.”

Helen Cordero (Cochiti Pueblo 1915-1994), pottery storyteller figure, 113/8 in. From the Collection of John and Joyce Price, Mercer Island, WA. Estimate: $2,500/3,500

One major highlight in the June 17 auction is a Hunkpapa Lakota (Sioux) pictorial muslin (est. $15/25,000) depicting warrior scenes from the life of Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka, ca. 1831-1890). The lot notes indicate possible attribution to Sitting Bull’s uncle, the warrior-artist Four Horns (Heu-Topa, ca. 1814-1886/87).

Also of note is a pottery story figure by Helen Cordero (1915-1994, Cochiti Pueblo) with estimates of $2,500 to $3,500. The piece is a rare historic gem hailing from the collection of Seattle art patrons John and Joyce Price.

Stay tuned for updates as Bonhams was still finalizing “some details of a larger, very exciting consignment or two” at the time this article was published. —
