Now available at Sandbar Trading in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is this hand-coiled traditionally fired red jar by Agapita Tafoya (1904-1959) of Santa Clara Pueblo. The pot, created around the 1950s, prominently features the Avanyu or Water Serpent. The artist was married to the exceptional potter Camilio Tafoya (1902-1995).
“Agapita was not a prolific potter but the work that she did, like this red-slipped jar measuring 5¾ inches tall by 6 inches wide, is a fine example of her high-quality work,” says Rick Gottsponer, gallery owner. “It is traditional to the Santa Clara style for the period. The background of the red-slipped design was over-painted with earth-colored clay, and the red slip was stone polished to a fine sheen. Agapita and Camilio are the parents and teachers of renowned potters Joseph Lonewolf and Grace Medicine Flower.”
