A proud member of the Samson Cree Nation where he was raised, Justin Jacob Louis is a father, husband and fashion designer based in Canada. He’s been designing for over a decade now, and has two brands: streetwear label SECTION 35, and his eponymous menswear label, which features an elevated focus on Indigenous-designed menswear.
“My work is just me, and it is inspired by so many things,” says Louis. “My designs can be loud and in your face at times, while also humorous and even understated. I like to hide subtle elements in the details so sometimes you might not even realize something is there until you get up close to see it. Ultimately, my work is inspired by where I come from, my culture, my identity and how I see the world through that lens and translated into something that can be worn. I am constantly exploring new and unique ways to weave culture into my work.”
This year is SECTION 35’s 10th anniversary. The first collection of the label’s anniversary year is a Spring Capsule, which features pieces focusing on “inspiration from the environment around me and our connection to the earth and plants and is centered around a camouflage motif I designed made of Devil’s club,” says Louis.
In addition, the designer’s eponymous collection, which just launched, is a tightly curated capsule of elevated flagship menswear pieces including trench coats, knitwear and tailoring. “The colors and motifs were inspired by a dream I had about the stars and moon over the prairies in the winter along with some pieces featuring horses, which is something I grew up around and are special animals in my community,” says the artist. “I am very proud of the collection, and I’ve spent over two years working to get this ready to launch.” —
