Life is full of funny situations, brilliant color and amazing artists that are important influences and subjects for Corey Stein’s work. “I enjoy using art to point out humorous contrasts, quirky juxtapositions and wordplay,” she shares. “Using traditional artforms, I explore contemporary issues to bring people into discussion.” Family issues with cancer, and Stein’s own recent experience with the disease, have inspired the Family Totem Cancer Series of collages. “The series symbolizes Tlingit members of my family who have had cancer, as well as recognizing my own cancer survival,” she says.

The crab is used as the symbol of the disease and as a tie to Stein’s Alaska Native heritage.
Stein received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, but art has always been a vital part of her family and life. —
