11. Winfield Trading Co.

An exceptional new basket is now available at Winfield Trading Co. in Gallup, New Mexico. The work, made by an artist once known, is woven from willow and devil’s claw. “Apache baskets with dates woven into them are exceptionally rare, often indicating a specific, commemorative purpose,” the gallery notes about the piece. “In general, Apache weavers express themselves through intricate geometric and pictorial designs, and a basket with a date typically signifies a special commission or a record of a significant event in the weaver’s life. This basket was woven in 1909, the year that one of the most important Apache leaders of all time, Geronimo, passed away at Fort Sill. The basket is roughly 16 inches in diameter.”

2. Buffalo Barry’s Indian Art
Now available at Buffalo Barry’s Indian Art are two styles of carving from Hopi artist Walter Howato (1921-2003). “[The artist] was Reed Clan and grew up in Sichomovi, Hopiland. After attending the Santa Fe Indian School, he had varied experiences ranging from working for Disney Studios in California to managing dynamite at the Glen Canyon Dam project,” notes gallery owner Barry Walsh. “Eventually he returned to Hopiland, where he became a major contributor to Hopi katsina art. On the left is a large 26-inch Palhikwmana done in the late-action/early ultrarealistic style. On the right is a Hemiskatsina done in the distressed style that he all but invented. His distressed style influenced many subsequent Hopi carvers.
