Faust Gallery will present Masters of American Indian Jewelry October 10 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The show, which opens with a special reception from 5 to 7 p.m., features iconic works by some of the most acclaimed artists over the last 75 years, including Charles Loloma, Jesse Monongya, Myron Panteah, Michael Kabotie, Clarence Lee and Charles Supplee.

Charles Loloma (Hopi, 1921-1991), double inlaid belt buckle with lapis, turquoise and coral
“These wonderful pieces come from a private collection that we just acquired at the end of the summer,” says Bill Faust, owner of the gallery. “This is one of the best collections we have handled over the last decade and we are thrilled to offer this in our gallery in Santa Fe, a city where many of these artists frequented during their storied careers.”

Wes Willie (Navajo (Diné)), War Bonnet, 18K gold inlaid bolo
Loloma will be represented by a double inlaid belt buckle with one side made of lapis, turquoise and coral and the other made with several different shades of coral. Loloma is frequently cited as the most famous American Indian jeweler. He revolutionized the field with his innovative and contemporary designs that drew on his Hopi heritage but brought them into the 20th century. Faust began his career working for his great aunt, Lovena Ohl, who was one of the most influential figures in the modern appreciation of American Indian art. Ohl began her career as a buyer for the Heard Museum Gift Shop in Phoenix. In 1978, she opened a gallery in Scottsdale and represented Loloma during his lifetime and worked alongside the artist for decades. The New York Times once referred to Ohl as the “doyenne of American Indian Art.”

Ric Charlie (Navajo (Diné)), gold double-sided Yei mask locket pendant
“I worked with Charles, and we were friends for over 10 years until he passed away in 1991,” says Faust. “I adored Charles; he was so good to Lovena and me. He always shared beautiful stories about Hopi culture and the significance of each piece he created.”
Several important living artists are also included in the exhibition, including Ric Charlie, Wes Willie, and brothers Lee and Raymond Yazzie. —
