The goal of every issue of Native American Art magazine is to include as much great content as possible, including thoughtful features, previews of all the major events, reports from the shows that have passed and lots of insight from the top Native American artists working today. Assembling the final magazine is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, but this puzzle had too many pieces, each one worthy of placement in the final package.
So to accommodate them we went a little crazy, but in the best way possible.
Not only do we have a comprehensive museum guide that runs 36 pages, we also have a trio of sections that, although aren’t connected, are linked simply because of the region, materials and events. This incredible combo of sections is our biennial section on basketry, a preview of the Cherokee Art Market and our first-ever Culture Guide focused on Tulsa, Oklahoma. What’s remarkable about these three sections is how they overlap a little on the edges. For instance, we highlight some basket weavers who will be showing at the Cherokee Art Market in October. And then, of course, the Cherokee Art Market takes place in Tulsa, which ties into our culture guide. Finally, Tulsa is home to many artists, including some that appear in other places in the magazine. These sections are truly in conversation with each other.
Every article is chosen to help guide collectors to all the best shows and events. We are, after all, a collector’s magazine, so we highly encourage readers to support artists, auctions, markets and galleries by going to the events and openings, buying the art and making inquiries. Even the museums, which are primarily for viewing art, will have sales and events where top-quality art is for sale, so don’t forget them either.
As always, if we’ve forgotten something, or maybe you want to draw our attention to a new show or event, please let me know. We aim to cover the entire market, from coast to coast, so if we’ve missed something we want it on our radar for next year. Wherever there is important Native American artwork, we’ll be there.
