Heritage Auctions offers materials from the William and Joey Ridenour Collection.

On September 13, Heritage Auctions will present selections from the William and Joey Ridenour Collection of ethnographic art. The collection largely features American Indian art consisting of predominantly Plains beadwork and Anasazi pottery, as well as Western Americana and Pre-Columbian art from Mexico to Peru.

Sikyatki polychrome seed jar, ca. 1400-1625, 13¾ in. Estimate: $12/18,000.

 

Highlights from the sale include a 43-inch Crow beaded hide cradleboard from around 1900. The cradleboard is decorated with confronting triangle motifs in various shades of glass seed beads and trimmed with red wool trade cloth. The piece is estimated at $18,000 to $22,000.

Elsewhere in the sale will be a Sikyatki polychrome seed jar from somewhere between 1400 and 1625. The jar has geometric motifs painted in red and black beneath the shoulder. The lot, measuring more than 13 inches in diameter, is estimated at $12,000 to $18,000.

Rare Crow beaded hide cradleboard, ca. 1900, 43 in. Estimate: $18/22,000.

 

Finally, a cabinet photo of Lakota chief Rain-in-the-Face will be offered with estimates at $2,000 to $4,000. The rare photo was taken by George E. Spencer in 1893 during the Chicago World’s Fair. Rain-in-the-Face was present as an attraction during the fair, also known as the World’s Columbian Exposition. —
