Welcome to the August/September issue of Native American Art! We are the official magazine of Santa Fe Indian Market, and this marks our eighth year with Southwestern Association for Indian Arts, better known as SWAIA. Time flies when you are having fun! August in Santa Fe is the best time of the year in our opinion. Much like the curtains opening for the first scene of a grand play, it is the same feeling when the market opens Saturday morning as 900+ artists greet visitors to their booths. Downtown Santa Fe is the place to be. We could not be more proud of this partnership with SWAIA, especially because of the way SWAIA curates, supports and cares about every artist and collector. It truly is magic! You will find our booth in the Santa Fe Plaza, where you can renew your subscription, pick up a copy of the magazine, talk about art, meet executive editor Michael Clawson, co-publisher Adolfo Castillo or myself. We are always happy to see you and what artworks you’ve acquired!
One of the ways we celebrate Santa Fe Indian Market is to present an award of excellence each year. Over the years, Michael Clawson has chosen exceptional works by well-deserved winners. When we announce the award at the Best of Show Ceremony on Friday, the room is full of hundreds of works of art. It’s never an easy choice because we see the best of the best, year after year. Our last three winners were Merlin Little Thunder (Southern Cheyenne) for a painting, Jason Garcia (Santa Clara Pueblo) for his clay tile, and Karis Jackson (Fort Berthold Arikara/Hidatsa/Crow) for her beaded ledger piece. We can’t wait to honor another artist this year during SWAIA’s Best of Show Ceremony at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.
And speaking of award winners, if you want to hear some of the top artists in their own voices, tune in to our podcast, the American Art Collective. We have more than 325 episodes, including many featuring Native American artists and even Santa Fe Indian Market winners.
There are 240 pages in this issue and more than 350 artists, galleries and museums represented. We hope you enjoy the issue and to see you in Santa Fe!
