Welcome to the June/July issue of Native American Art magazine! Adolfo has just returned from SWAIA Native Fashion Week, which has swiftly grown into the destination for the best Native American fashion designers across the nation. I am sure you have seen our social media posts as he reported from the show. We hope you enjoy the imagery!
In this issue we celebrate the launch of our Culture Guide destination features, which will allow us to spotlight key cities across the United States with rich Indigenous heritage. Our sister title, Western Art Collector, has a very popular monthly guide called State of the Art, which offers travel suggestions for art lovers and collectors. We felt our collectors wanted (and needed) a spotlight destination guide for Native American Art and it has been created as a three-issue series: Seattle (in this issue); Tulsa, Oklahoma (October/November); and Scottsdale, Arizona (December/January). We hope you enjoy Seattle this month and stay tuned for Tulsa and Scottsdale later this year.
Our Culture Guide: Seattle is simply brilliant for anyone wanting to know more about Seattle’s Native American culture. This includes celebrations, galleries, museums and artists. Starting on Page 66 you will find the story of the region and its richness in the Indigenous arts. Being from Seattle myself, reading the Culture Guide brings back art memories from my childhood, especially the Coast Salish style of the Northwest Coast that I grew up around. Whether you are rooted in the Northwest or the Southwest, or somewhere else entirely, Native American art styles are uniquely regional, which makes visiting these places a one-of-a-kind experience. We hope you enjoy our guide to Seattle this month. It is truly amazing!
This is also our highly anticipated annual pottery issue. You will find, starting on Page 41, stories related to pottery, including articles on Chris Youngblood, Les Namingha, Tony Da, Tammy Garcia and more. Our pottery buyer’s guide provides an efficiency to art collecting that we believe you will find valuable as well. We want you to feel like you know these artists and their passions by the time you are done reading. Pottery is a central focal point for any collection and we emphasize why in these pages.
Sincerely,
Wendie Martin and Adolfo Castillo
