A Summer Showcase

The Eiteljorg Museum hosts its highly anticipated annual Indian Market & Festival.

On June 28 and 29, approximately 130 American Indian, First Nation and Alaskan Native artists will convene in Downtown Indianapolis to participate in the 33rd annual Eiteljorg Indian Market & Festival, one of the city’s largest multicultural events each summer. Held will be held on the grounds of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, where the artists will showcase and sell their art. There is also a juried competition. “Attendees of all ages and backgrounds will have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a space celebrating, educating and amplifying Native cultures,” says Conner Richberg (Mohawk, Turtle Clan), festival manager at the Eiteljorg Museum.

Marketgoers will be exposed to many forms of Native art, including jewelry, pottery, weavings, paintings, beadwork, quillwork, basketry, carvings, sculpture, paintings and more. Many award-winning artists from across the United States and Canada take part in the Eiteljorg Indian Market & Festival annually; other established artists will have booths for the first time.

Artists can submit their art to be judge in a juried art competition across numerous categories. Awards and cash prizes will be presented to the winning artists during the Market Morning Breakfast, a ticketed event held Saturday, June 28, before the market opens to the public. Artworks that receive the Harrison Eiteljorg Purchase Award will become part of the museum’s permanent collection.

In addition to the abundance of art on display and available for sale, the market also features live music, storytelling and performances by Indigenous Enterprise, an intertribal dance company led by Kenneth Shirley (Navajo (Diné)). The group members will perform in their individual regalia and use powwow dance styles with a touch of hip-hop. Food and drink from Native-owned businesses offering traditional foods and modern interpretations will also be available.

Richberg adds, “The Eiteljorg Indian Market & Festival is an event for guests to support Native artists through collecting their artwork, and to genuinely participate through experiences that become  treasured memories.”

Tickets also include admission to galleries inside the museum, including the temporary exhibitions Radical Stitch and Voices from the Arctic: Contemporary Inuit Art, and the ongoing exhibition Expressions of Life: Native Art in North America.
