What do textiles, weavings, beadwork and fashion have in common? They are the star lineup for the April/May issue of Native American Art! In addition, they are art categories that we see in our daily lives. And not just see, but also wear. These are all mediums used by Native American fashion designers. They are artists. Their work is a reflection of their daily surroundings. And we can bring it home into our lives as well.
This month’s buyers’ guides and features dedicated to Beadwork & Quillwork, and Textiles & Weavings are full of new artists for you to discover. When you are finished, turn to our coverage of the big fashion shows happening in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in May. Returning for its second year is SWAIA Native Fashion Week from May 7 to 11. This is a must-attend attend event of the year. In addition, there will be even more fashion events over at the Santa Fe Railyard Arts District for Native Fashion Week Santa Fe, which is debuting this year for the first time. Many of the biggest designers will be at these events. You can read them starting on Page 92.
We also have amazing gallery previews this month, including a Daniel Begay pottery show at King Galleries, a show for glass artist Dan Friday at Blue Rain Gallery, and a museum exhibition featuring photographer Cara Romero. We have a Collector Home starting on Page 52 where you will see an incredible home tastefully decorated with Native American art, including a large selection of beadwork. It will inspire you! Also related to beadwork is an exhibition at the Eiteljorg Museum called Radical Stitch, which sounds too cool to miss. Seeing beads being used in a modern and relevant way is exciting, and the artistry is sure to thrill new and old collectors alike. We hope this issue fulfills your desire to have art in your life daily.
Sincerely,
Wendie Martin and Adolfo Castillo
