Cultural Crossroads

A new art and design fair celebrates the diverse artistic heritage of the Southwest.

There’s a lot of buzz around Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week, a brand-new art and design fair that has attracted more than 100 leading galleries and art dealers from all over the country and beyond to participate in its inaugural year. Staged in one of the top art destinations in the Southwest, in Scottsdale, Arizona’s sprawling WestWorld event center, the show will feature a combination of contemporary and historical art and design, including a strong emphasis on Indigenous works by established and emerging artists. Cultural performances, fashion shows, installations and illuminating special programming add depth and context, making it a truly immersive experience.

One major highlight among the Native American offerings is a special exhibition curated by Diné artist Tony Abeyta, who is also a member of the fair advisory committee. Through rare pieces by the likes of Fritz Scholder, Charles Loloma, Lloyd Kiva New, Frank Lloyd Wright, Philip C. Curtis and Paolo Soleri, Desert Modernism will explore the intertwined trajectory of Phoenix artists of Native, Anglo and Hispanic descent between roughly 1930 and 1980.

Collectors of Native American art should make a point to seek out Blue Rain Gallery of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Durango, Colorado; Tucson-based Medicine Man Gallery; and William Havu Gallery of Denver.

Blue Rain Gallery will be presenting works by contemporary artists Chris Pappan (Osage/Kaw/Cheyenne River Sioux), Preston Singletary (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi Nation), alongside a broad selection of the non-Native artists they represent. “Blue Rain Gallery is thrilled to be participating in Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week,” shares a representative, “an exclusive event that brings together the worlds of luxury and fine art. This prestigious occasion offers a unique opportunity to showcase the gallery’s exceptional roster of artists to an audience that appreciates craftsmanship, beauty and innovation.”

Medicine Man Gallery will be showing work by artists as wide ranging as contemporary painter Mateo Romero (Cochiti Pueblo) and the historic Kiowa artist T.C. Cannon (1946-1976), as well as potter Tony Da (San Ildefonso Pueblo), jewelry artist Roy Talahaftewa (Hopi) and a selection of early 20th century textiles.

William Havu Gallery will be presenting pieces from the estate of the influential abstract artist Jeff Kahm (Plains Cree, 1968-2021).

“The launch of Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week is a long time coming and the latest sign that the art world sees metro Phoenix and Arizona as key players in the global arts scene,” says Trey Brennen, event co-owner and the proprietor of T.H. Brennen Fine Art in Old Town Scottsdale. “With the support of major art and cultural institutions across Arizona, this event will help solidify the region’s place on the international art map, and draw much-deserved attention to its talent and artistic identity.”

Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week kicks off with an exclusive, afternoon VIP preview on Thursday, March 20, followed by a gala event that evening from 5 to 8 p.m. The fair continues through March 23. For details and to purchase tickets, visit www.scottsdaleartweek.com. —
