Santa Fe Art Auction brings icons of the West and Southwest to bidders in November for the 30th year.

Many years ago, the Santa Fe Art Auction was made up of a single sale every November, when top collectors and top consigners would congregate to test the strength of the market. Since then, the auction house has grown into a behemoth in the Southwest: multiple sales across many categories, a large auction facility on a choice piece of real estate, a talented team of auction specialists and major works by important artists at every sale.

Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994), Abstract Crown Dancer, bronze, artist’s proof, 42½ x 17¾ x 14 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

No matter how big the house grows, though, it always returns to its roots every November with its largest and most popular sale, the Signature Live Sale. This year the sale will be held on November 8 and 9 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It will also be celebrating its 30th anniversary.

“This year’s offerings will include a wide selection of both historic and contemporary pieces, ranging from Western paintings and works by the Southwest Modernists to wonderful examples of historic pueblo pottery, Diné/Navajo textiles, Edward Curtis photogravures, and works by many important Native artists practicing today,” notes the auction house. “Look for exemplary works by Fritz Scholder, Allan Houser, Margarete Bagshaw, Kevin Red Star, Tony Abeyta, Maria Martinez, Popovi Da and Tony Da.”

Quincy Tahoma (Navajo (Diné), 1920-1956), The Last Roundup, 1942, gouache on paper, 12¾ x 28½ in. Estimate: $8/12,000

During this year’s sale, Santa Fe Art Auction will be offering the Gregory Warren Nelson Collection of Taos, New Mexico. “A patron of the arts and outdoor enthusiast with a keen eye, Nelson developed a world-class collection of Western and Native American art throughout his lifetime,” says Gillian Blitch, president and CEO at Santa Fe Art Auction. “Significant artists in Greg’s collection that will appear at the Signature Live Sale include Gustave Baumann, Ansel Adams, Howard Norton Cook, Gene Kloss, Barbara Latham, Dorothy Eugenie Brett, Quincy Tahoma, and Awa (Alfonso Roybal) Tsireh.”

Allan Houser (Chiricahua Apache, 1914-1994), Abstract Crown Dancer, bronze, artist’s proof, 42½ x 17¾ x 14 in. Estimate: $30/50,000

Other lots in the sale include an Allan Houser bronze, Abstract Crown Dancer (est. $30/50,000), and three incredible paintings: Margarete Bagshaw’s 2003 oil Choices (est. $1,500/2,500), Tony Abeyta’s 2007 untitled charcoal and oil work (est. $3/5,000) and Quincy Tahoma's 1942 gouache The Last Roundup (est. $8/12,000).

Margarete Bagshaw (Santa Clara Pueblo, 1964-2015), Choices, 2003, oil on panel, 18 x 24 x 1 in. Estimate: $1,500/2,500

The auction house is known for its stunning weavings, and this year will be no exception with a Germantown blanket with crosses and whirling logs in the design. The 90-by-73-inch weaving is expected to sell for $3,000 to $5,000.

Stay tuned to the auction house’s website to see new consignments that come in prior to the sale.
