Large Collections

Heritage Auctions to feature more than 500 lots in upcoming ethnographic sale in Dallas.

On October 30, Heritage Auctions will present Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Art Signature Auction, a semi-annual sale that will highlight important historic and contemporary works from Native American artists. The auction, which will have more than 500 lots, will take place at Heritage’s Dallas showroom.

Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo), large Cochiti polychrome figure, ca. 1992, clay, paint and cotton string, 20” Estimate: $3/5,000

Twelve Southwest rings, sizes ranging from 4¼ to 7”  Estimate: $500/700.

The sale will primarily feature two large consignments from private collections: the Charles William Boyd III Collection of Plains Beadwork, which includes moccasins, tobacco bags and knife sheaths, mainly from the Cheyenne; and the Allan and Carol Hayes Collection of Southwestern Pottery. Allan Hayes is one of the authors of Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni, a book that is found on many collectors’ and art dealers’ shelves.

Seferina Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo, 1931-2007), two Cochiti polychrome sunbathers, ca. 2005, clay and paint, 5¾” and 6¼” Estimate: $700/1,000

One highlight from the Hayes Collection is Virgil Ortiz’s large polychrome figure from around 1992. The 20-inch-tall Cochiti figure is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000. It comes much earlier in Ortiz’s distinguished career. Another lot from the Hayes Collection includes two polychrome sunbathers from Seferina Ortiz, Virgil’s mother. The pieces, which will be sold together in one lot, are roughly 6 inches tall. They are estimated at $700 to $1,000.

Northern Cheyenne beaded hide knife sheath and knife, ca. 1880, hide, commercial leather, seed beads, red pigment, metal cones, sinew; wood and metal, stamped Lamson & Goodnow, 9¼” Estimate: $3/5,000.

Elsewhere in the sale will be two beaded knife sheaths from around the 1880s. The first, from Northern Cheyenne, features green, red and white beads, as well as a thunderbird decoration in the hide on the back of the sheath. It is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000. The second sheath, Cheyenne/Arapaho, features a more intricate bead pattern and metal cones. It’s estimated at $2,000 to $3,000.

The Dallas sale will also include a single lot with 12 silver rings with turquoise and coral. The rings range in sizes from 4½ to 7. All 12 are estimated at $500 to $700.

Cheyenne/Arapaho beaded hide knife sheath and knife, ca. 1880, hide, commercial leather, glass seed beads, red pigment, metal cones, horsehair; wood and metal, stamped J. Russell & Co. Estimate: $2/3,000.
