Lisa C. Redford (Hidatsa)

Fashion meets art with Hidatsa designer Lisa C. Redford, who is the owner and creator of the fashion brand Inspired by LCR. Redford—who also uses her Hidatsa name, Ground Cedar Woman (Creeping Cedar), Awah-Miduah-Qhobadi—designs contemporary, haute couture, streetwear and statement pieces that have an Indigenous flair with an edgy, modern look inspired by Redford’s diverse heritage. She is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation) of North Dakota on her mother’s side and of Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw descent on her father’s side.

Cotton polyester blend hoodie dress from the Evolve collection. Available in men’s and women’s hoodies, jackets and shirts.

Resilient Fringe, repurposed denim with bleach painting and hand-print bleach splashes and cut fringe.

“The designs within each piece of my work are created from my own original artwork and graphic design. Most pieces are limited editions. Many designs are created by the repurposing of clothing and ecofriendly print,” Redford says, adding that her first collection, Evolve, launched in 2021 as a response to Covid. Her second collection, Off the Trail (of Tears) was her way of honoring her Eastern Cherokee/Chickasaw heritage.

Chris Pina is wearing a one-of-a-kind red shirt, War Pony, painted with bleach. Anjeliq Aurora is wearing an upcycled, faux-leather jacket with fur that includes paintings with acrylic fabric paint. The lama-fur collar was hand sewn on to the jacket. On the back of the jacket, titled Jimi, are quotes from musician Jimi Hendrix, who is of Native American descent. The metallic skirt is made of a polyester blend.

“Since the two collections, I have created more custom, one-of-a-kind pieces by repurposing clothing and utilizing various mediums,” the designer says. “Most recently I have been painting on repurposed denim with bleach. This has allowed me to create unique custom designs as the bleach reacts differently on each piece of material used, thereby, no design is ever the same.”
