An Imported Showcase

It’s August and the place to be is Santa Fe—for SWAIA’s Indian Market of course, but also for the countless ancillary events, shows and sales that take place around it. One of them is Waddell Gallery’s pop-up jewelry show, which has become a popular annual tradition. For the event, the Scottsdale, Arizona, gallery packs up its considerable collection of Native American jewelry and brings it to Santa Fe for a truly dazzling showcase in the library of the historic Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi.

Carl and Irene Clark (Navajo), Yei bracelet, gold, Australian opal, turquoise, coral, lapis and mother of pearl shell.

The sale runs August 14 through 18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a special opening reception on Thursday, August 15, from 4 to 7 p.m.

“As usual for Santa Fe Indian Market we have been putting together an amazing collection of the finest Native American Jewelry, with the highest grade materials from today’s top artists and the masters of the past,” says gallery owner Mike Waddell. “We will be featuring many new pieces we have collected in addition to our extensive inventory of the highest quality Native American jewelry.”

Darryl Dean Begay, dragonfly bracelet, gold, Bisbee turquoise and Apache blue turquoise.

Some of the most renowned jewelry artists will have pieces in the show including Charles Loloma, Lee Yazzie, Jesse Monongya, Preston Monongye, Richard Chavez, Kenneth Begay, Charles Supplee, Jared Chavez, White Buffalo, Perry Shorty, Darryl Dean Begay, Vernon Haskie, Wes Willie, Boyd Tsosie, Sonwai, Sherian Honhongva, Don Supplee, Harvey Begay, Julian Lovato, James Little, Larry Golsh, Edison Cummings, Roy Talahaftewa, Victor Beck and Jake Livingston.

One of the highlights is an intricate micro-mosaic inlaid Yei bracelet in 14-karat gold by artists Carl and Irene Clark. Coming from a long line of highly skilled Navajo silversmiths, the Clarks will sometimes place nearly 6,000 stones in a single bracelet. This piece features Australian opal, turquoise, coral, lapis and mother of pearl shell.

Edith Tsabetsaye (Zuni), squash blossom necklace, silver and Lone Mountain turquoise.

Another piece of note is an 18-karat gold, tufa-cast dragonfly bracelet by renowned Navajo jeweler Darryl Dean Begay. The piece, which combines the historic tufa casting technique with lapidary inlay and fabrication, is set with two high-domed Bisbee turquoise cabs and accents of Apache blue turquoise.

Other works that the gallery is particularly excited about are an “Edith Tsabetsaye masterpiece”—a sterling silver squash blossom necklace and earrings; and a reversible gold necklace by Jesse Monongya that was featured in Lois Dubin’s book on the artist.

Waddell’s jewelry show takes place in the library of the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi.

“We have over 120 years of experience in representing the finest turquoise and jewelry and are known to have some of the best jewelry created in the last 50 years,” says Waddell. “Many of the pieces we represent are museum quality and artists and collectors like to come to our show to gather and discuss the art at its finest.”
