Remarkable Contributions

The American Indian Arts Festival elevates the diverse works of Native American artists.

The American Indian Arts Festival, previously the American Indian Arts Marketplace, showcases the work of more than 150 elite Native American artists, including the best contemporary and traditional Native jewelry, pueblo pottery, sculpture, basketry and beadwork.

The event takes place June 8 and 9 at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. “Los Angeles, a city renowned for its diversity, continues to assert itself as a global epicenter for creativity,” says Robyn Hetrick, director of programs and public events at the Autry. “In recent years, this sprawling metropolis has witnessed a burgeoning of artist communities and the rise of new galleries, firmly establishing itself on the international art stage. Recognizing the profound impact of Native American and Indigenous artists within this major market is crucial, and events like the Autry Museum’s annual American Indian Arts Festival play a pivotal role in elevating the remarkable contributions of Native American artists.”

Featuring such prominent names as Cara Romero, Harry Fonseca, Darrick Tsosie, Verma Nequatewa, Everton Tsosie, Charlene Holy Bear, Leah Mata-Fragua and many others, the American Indian Arts Festival encourages guests to purchase art in a space that directly supports the artists.

Hetrick discusses some of the extraordinary works that collectors will be able to explore at the 2024 festival: “From the captivating storyteller figures crafted by Darrick Tsosie (Jemez Pueblo) to the bold neo-expressionistic paintings of Everton Tsosie (Navajo), the American Indian Arts Festival showcases a diverse array of artistic expressions that bridge the gap between tradition and modernity. Traditional artistry shines through the mixed media pieces of Peter Boome (Upper Skagit) and the intricate craftsmanship of Rowan Harrison (Pueblo of Isleta/Navajo). Emerging talents like Hiro Cash (Navajo) infuse their work with imagination, inviting us to explore their personal journeys and how these shape their art. The beadwork of Charlene Holy Bear (Standing Rock Sioux Tribe) and Amelia M. White (Dine’/Navajo) beckons. And no one will want to miss stunning original jewelry by Verma Sonwai Nequatewa (Hopi), Alfred Joe (Navajo) or Leroy Begay (Navajo).”

At its core, the mission of the festival has always rested with shining a spotlight on the contributions of California’s Native American communities. “The Autry is changing this narrative by using the festival as a platform to highlight the enduring spirit and continued contributions of artists like Leah Mata-Fragua (Northern Chumash),” Hetrick adds. Mata-Fragua’s work can be seen in the ongoing exhibition Human Nature and Reclaiming El Camino: Native Resistance in the Missions and Beyond on view at the Autry through June 15, 2025.

River Tikwi Garza (Tongva), whose work is also part of several Autry Museum exhibitions, will be creating new artwork live during the festival. “Participants have an opportunity to engage in linoleum block printing using River’s designs influenced by Tongva iconography, basket patterns and elements of his own artistic style,” says Hetrick.

She continues, “From intricate beadwork to stunning original jewelry, the festival’s offerings reflect the rich tapestry of Indigenous craftsmanship and creativity. As attendees immerse themselves in this vibrant celebration of art and culture, they are not only treated to a visual feast but also invited to engage in a deeper dialogue about the importance of preserving and honoring our shared cultural heritage.”
