Home & Away Gallery
Based out of Wilton, Maine, Home & Away Gallery specializes in Native American art in many varieties. A recent acquisition in the gallery is this Clara Keezer (Passamaquoddy) handkerchief basket. “The basket design originated in the Victorian era as a handkerchief holder by Wabanaki basket makers for tourists summering in Maine,” the gallery notes. “It was one of the many fancy basket designs that continue to be made in current times. Clara Keezer, a longtime Passamaquoddy weaver who passed away in 2016, made this basket with little variation from the way she had made them since the mid- to late-20th century.” The basket is now on view at the Maine gallery.
Alan Kessler Gallery
Now available at the Alan Kessler Gallery is a rare and important Hopi katsina doll depicting Shalako Mana wearing a pierced tablita with the remains of mounted feathers and traditional designs on the casemask, with a painted feather dress. The doll is 15 inches tall and 11 inches wide. It’s from around 1890 to 1900. The carver is an unknown Hopi artist. Provenance for the piece is well established and available upon request. A similar example can be seen on Plate 65 in the German book Kachina: Figuren der Hopi-Indianer by Horst Hartmann. That example is part of the collection of the Museum für Völkerkunde, the museum of ethnology, in Dresden, Germany.
