Ethnographic Antique Store
The second item is this superb Oglala Teton Sioux Man’s Quilled Vest from 1903. Measuring 17 by 20 inches, the vest is among a group of other rare items field collected more than 100 years ago by Charles Raymond and Nellie Rathbun Woodard near the Montana-Nebraska border. “This beautiful vest is artfully decorated with dyed porcupine quills,” the gallery notes. “It has been left untouched without any repairs. The remaining label number 0522 corresponds with Raymond’s handwritten inventory list.”

Home & Away Gallery
Maine’s Home & Away Gallery is now offering this rare scrimshawed tusk that was acquired from the artist in a remote Alaskan village in the 1970s. The old ivory tusk, sometimes referred to as fossil ivory, picked up a dark patina from the mud it had been buried in. The artifact had previously been used as a drill-type fire starter, as evidenced by a rough indentation on the back. The five dall sheep and the Native background landscape were expertly incised by artist M. Echok. Contact the gallery for more information.
