Paint, Paper & Photography

A Lasting Experience

While many artworks created by Native American artists can serve as functional objects—including basketry, weaving, jewelry and fashion—mediums like paint, paper and photography don’t usually have utility purposes, but are quite lasting and emotionally rewarding. These works also connect artists and collectors as they speak through paints, pencils, graphite and charcoal, photography and other mediums. Throughout this section dedicated to available-to-purchase, two-dimensional (and sometimes three-dimensional) artworks, you might just find a piece that calls to you in ways you never thought possible. Find pieces that run the gamut, including both historic and contemporary visions in a variety of styles and presentations.

Blue Rain Gallery

Helen K. Tindel’s bond with art is inherent, ingrained in her lineage. Born to a family of Santa Clara Pueblo painters—Pablita Velarde, Helen Hardin and Margarete Bagshaw—art is in her blood. Initially using painting as a cathartic tool, Tindel expressed intense emotions through abstract compositions, connecting with her family’s artistic legacy. In her art, flowers became a recurring motif, a tribute to familial love encapsulated in her mother’s words, “I love you in the same way the sun shines on the flowers.” Available at Blue Rain Gallery is Flower Drops, created in oil on wood panel, and measures at 30 by 30 inches.

Home & Away Gallery

Artist Rain Scott is inspired by the pottery of his Acoma homeland to make vessels from folded paper. This vessel is in the shape of an olla, a traditional pottery form used by many tribal nations. It includes an image of the legendary Tewa serpent Avanyu, guardian of water. Scott uses feathers as a complement to the colors of the origami vessel, and measures at 12 by 61/4 inches (at its widest).

Adobe Gallery

Influential artist John Nieto (1936-2018, Mescalero Apache/Hispanic) painted Sioux Chief in 1986, measuring at 381/2 by 29 inches. Adobe Gallery notes about the piece: “[Nieto] placed his figure over a purple and pink background. A thin, bright-red line separates background colors and links with a red line outlining the headdress, communicating cohesion between the chief and his surroundings. The subject stands tall in the center of the canvas, with his massive, commanding headdress nearly reaching the upper edge. He is wrapped in a blanket, or perhaps a flag—many of Nieto’s works feature American flags alongside Indigenous imagery, and the red, white and blue stripes seen over the shoulders are a subtle expression of this idea. Brilliant green and orange tones appear above, drawing attention to the chief’s face and headdress.”
