“My work is highly reflective of who I am and the beliefs I hold as an Arikara Hidatsa woman,” says award-winning artist and designer Lauren Good Day. “Being raised steeped with my peoples’ lifeways, stories and culture has influenced my work, designs and iconography. I design wearable art, created from my original artwork.” These include Good Day’s beadwork, ledger drawings and traditional regalia, which are then made into prints and patterns on contemporary silhouettes.

“I see my work as a continuation of our material culture, bridging the stories of our past with contemporary Native cultures.”

Her most recent summer 2023 collection is based on the “traditional Ribbon Dress of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara people, MHA Nation.” Included within the collection are ribbon patterns, as well as horse and rider ledger art prints. “I love color! My ancestors used what was readily available to them, [and] with the advent of fabrics, materials, beads and colors, it’s created an array of bright and colorful pieces [that has] progressed throughout our history,” says Good Day. “I see my work as a continuation of our material culture, bridging the stories of our past with contemporary Native cultures.”
