Robust Mixture

Paintings, works on paper, jewelry, pottery and much more will be included in the Santa Fe Art Auction’s August sale.

On August 12 and 13, Santa Fe Art Auction will present its big summer Native American art sale, American Indian Art: Classic to Contemporary. Living up to its title, the sale will include a massive variety of work in many mediums, both historical pieces and those made by living artists. The sale will come at a perfect time as visitors descend into Santa Fe, New Mexico, for the centennial celebration of the Santa Fe Indian Market, which takes place the following weekend.

Preston Monongye (Hopi, 1927-1987) and Jesse Monongya (Hopi/Navajo(Diné)), Silver and Lander Turquoise Raindrop Necklace, sterling silver, Lander turquoise, 2.2 oz, 62 grams, 14”, central pendant: 1¾ x ¾ x ¼”. Estimate: $6/9,000

“We are expecting much more foot traffic," says Gillian Blitch, president and CEO of the Santa Fe Art Auction. "We’ve already seen a tremendous amount as the season has started. We’re also just really privileged this year because so much is happening, including the grand anniversary at the [Institute of American Indian Arts], which we will be a part [of] in a collaborative capacity…It’s an exciting time to be in Santa Fe.”

Charles Loloma (Hopi, 1921-1991) and Pierre Touraine, Gold Badger Paw Bracelet, 14K gold Estimate: $2/4,000

The August sale will likely have more than 500 items, including additional pieces from the Georgia and Charles Loloma Collection, as well as selections from the Connie and Buddy Sanchez Collection out of Albuquerque. “They were longtime and well-known collectors, and Connie was a glass artist in her own right,” says Blitch. “They collected mostly contemporary Native American flat art, including paintings and works on paper, but also collected jewelry, pottery and other remarkable pieces.”

Diego Romero (Cochiti), Pueblo Maiden Bowl, 2009, ceramic, 2½ x 7½ x 7½” Estimate: $3/5,000

Highlights from the sale include a Preston Monongye spider cuff bracelet with turquoise and coral (est. $4/6,000) and a raindrop necklace collaboration (est. $6/9,000) that the artist did with his son, Jesse Monongya. Another key collaboration in the sale is Charles Loloma’s gold badger paw bracelet (est. $2/4,000) that he worked on with French artist Pierre Touraine. Finally, in a third collaboration, contemporary ledger artist Chris Pappan worked with Thomas “Breeze” Marcus to create Transformation (est. $800/1,200), a mixed media work on paper.

Starr Hardridge (Muscogee Creek), Summer Long, acrylic, 24 x 18” Estimate: $1,500/2,500

Chris Pappan (Kaw/Osage/Cheyenne River Sioux) and Thomas “Breeze” Marcus (Tohono O’odham), Transformation, mixed media/paper, 15 x 10” Estimate: $800/$1,200

Other works on paper include Virginia Stroud’s Untitled (Crossing the Stream) (est. $800/1,200) and two Carl Woodring gouaches: Untitled (Warrior on Horseback) (est. $1,500/2,500) and End of the Trail (est. $1/2,000), both of which show the Osage artist’s contemporary design and graphical qualities to his work. All of the proceeds from the Woodring pieces will go to various art organizations in Oklahoma.

Additional lots include pottery by Diego Romero, paintings by Nocona Burgess and Starr Hardridge, a Zia pot and Apache basket, as well as numerous weavings and pueblo carvings.
