Remembering the Future: 100 YEARS of Santa Fe Indian Market

A Letter from the director of SWAIA

Welcome to Santa Fe Indian Market’s Centennial Celebration and to the 2022 Official Market Magazine. For 100 years, Santa Fe Indian Market has been the place where Native North American art and culture meet the world.

This year’s market will be the first since the pandemic that we are able to offer an unrestricted and free market on both Saturday, August 20, and Sunday, August 21. We are overjoyed to welcome back visitors, artists, collectors and locals to our esteemed market and cultural celebration.

SWAIA staff have been working diligently to prepare for this historic moment and to create the events that make Santa Fe Indian Market the place to be this August. We encourage you to join us at our ticketed Gala, Auction and Fashion Show on Saturday and at Sunday’s Finale Fashion Show. On Sunday morning we also celebrate the return of the Native American Clothing Contest on the Plaza’s main stage after a two-year hiatus.

Outside of the traditional Indian Market, we suggest you stop by the New Mexico History Museum, conveniently located just off the Plaza, to visit the exhibition: Honoring Tradition and Innovation:100 Years of Santa Fe’s Indian Market 1922-2022, tracing the market’s history.

Longtime partners Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) return to present the 2022 Native Cinema Showcase, an annual celebration of the best in Native film.

With so much exciting programming to experience, we know that visitors will never be at a loss for exciting things to do.

I hope that you will discover unexpected treasures, make new friends and enjoy the beauty and world-class artists that define Indian Market.

See you on the Plaza!

Respectfully,

Kim Peone, SWAIA Executive Director
