Indigenous Celebration 2022 is positioning itself to be that movement for Native American art. The organization—started in 2021 to help expand the impact of the Santa Fe Indian Market centennial celebration, among other events—aims to promote Indigenous art, artists and events through a stunning array of partnerships. “This campaign will launch a sea change in the perception of Indigenous arts, culture and resilience, propelling them to their rightful place as the original American art and cultural representation,” the organization’s mission statement reads. “IC22 will be the world’s most notable destination for Indigenous arts and culture.”

The organization’s chair, Kim Martindale, a show producer and longtime champion of Indigenous artwork, says IC22 will help focus attention on events, fairs, markets, artists, openings and other aspects of the Native American art market. “We have to let the world know how important Indigenous art is and where it’s headed. This is going to be a huge movement, and it’s the first time more than 50 organizations have all voiced their support and excitement for Indigenous arts,” Martindale says. “What we want to do is help tell stories. If you are a collector of American or Canadian art, you can’t tell the stories of those countries without including art by Indigenous people. Indigenous art is also a great place to be acquiring artwork. If you’re looking for the next big art market, it’s right here.”
The organization will operate nationally, and already has partners across the United States and Canada, but it’s using this summer in Santa Fe to help shine a light on its mission, partners and a variety of upcoming events. Major IC22 partners include Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the School for Advanced Research, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Association, SITE Santa Fe, the Denver Art Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, Blue Rain Gallery, Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA), King Galleries, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, Objects of Art Shows, Santa Fe Art Auction and countless other organizations, institutions and art destinations. International Artist Publishing, publisher of Native American Art magazine, is also a proud partner of IC22.
