During one full week showcasing exceptional works of Native American art, Blue Rain Gallery will host two major exhibitions, along with glass-blowing and painting-demonstrations that kick off Thursday, August 18 with the opening of the first group show. Running through August 22, the show will feature pieces by celebrated Native American artists Jody Naranjo, Chris Pappan, Dan Friday, Helen Tindel, Starr Hardridge, Lisa Holt and Harlan Reano, Ryan Singer, Frank Buffalo Hyde, Maria Samora and Raven Skyriver. The diverse mediums on display include glass sculpture, painting, ceramics, jewelry and more in styles that range from the traditional to the highly contemporary.
Preston Singletary (Tlingit), Raven Crescent, blown and sand carved glass, 20 x 12 x 41/2"
Potter Jody Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico) will show her playfully designed sgraffito-carved vessels. Husband-and-wife team Lisa Holt (Cochiti Pueblo) and Harlan Reano (Santo Domingo/Kewa Pueblo) will show their ceramics which, while rooted in the tradition of Cochiti Pueblo ceramics, have a distinctive modern flair.
Chris Pappan (Kaw/Osage/Cheyenne River Sioux), Olde Time Religion, graphite, gold leaf and ink on Odd Fellows ledger, 18 x 12"
Multimedia artist Chris Pappan (Kaw/Osage/Cheyenne River Sioux) puts a unique spin on ledger art infused with social commentary, often incorporating graphite, colored pencil, map collage and occasional paint in pieces on the historic ledger paper so symbolic to Native American cultures.
Jody Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico), pottery, natural clay with sgraffito carving
Dan Friday adds glasswork to the mix of art forms in the exhibit. Using techniques that accentuate the qualities of his medium, Friday often creates imagery and symbols that are inherent to his tribe, the Lummi Nation from northern Washington.
New to Blue Rain Gallery is Navajo painter Ryan Singer, whose pop realist portraits and “Star Wars” imagery places elements of Native culture and childhood memories into familiar pop culture tropes. Also on display will be Maria Samora’s (Pueblo of Taos, New Mexico) clean, contemporary jewelry that are wearable pieces of fine art.
Frank Buffalo Hyde(Onondaga), Prayers in 5G, acrylic on canvas, 40 x 30"
A second solo exhibition of Preston Singletary’s glass art opens on August 19 and runs through September 3. His sculptural pieces feature formline symbolism distinctive of his Tlingit culture. Singletary and Friday will present glass blowing demonstrations on August 19 and 20 from 11 to 3 p.m. The gallery will also host painting demonstrations led by Navajo artist Hyrum Joe on Thursday and Friday, and another by Helen K. Tindel (Santa Clara Pueblo) on Saturday and Sunday. To stay up to date on Blue Rain's exciting roster of events, please visit the gallery website.
