Iroquois Arts Festival celebrates Haudenosaunee culture

In addition to its trove of ancestral pieces, the Iroquois Museum also houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of contemporary Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) art work. For the 39th year, the museum, located in Upstate New York, will host the Iroquois Arts Festival, a celebration of all aspects of the Haudenosaunee culture.

At the heart of the festival is the Iroquois Art Market. Open exclusively to Haudenosaunee artists, festival-goers will find contemporary and traditional pieces that include beadwork, sculpture, leatherwork, carvings, drawings and paintings, dichroic glass jewelry, clay monoprints, feather-work, silverwork, and drums and rattles.

The Iroquois Museum building is a work of art designed in the shape and spirit of the traditional longhouses that once graced the valleys of Upstate New York.

Rounding out the market will be a variety entertainment, including a Saturday performance of “Native Americana” by award-winning singer-songwriter Dr. Darryl Tonemah. Other weekend highlights include traditional Iroquois social dances, storytelling, a participatory sculpture project, a wide variety of educational programming, museum exhibits, arts and crafts activities and an array of Native specialties from Haudenosaunee food vendors.
