Sorrel Sky Gallery has quite a few reasons to celebrate this year. The gallery is celebrating 20 years at its original Durango, Colorado, location, as well as the iconic centennial of the Santa Fe Indian Market in New Mexico this August. As part of the festivities surrounding Market, Sorrel Sky is hosting a four-day group show at its Santa Fe location, elevating some of the top Native American artists working today.
Ben Nighthorse (Northern Cheyenne), Crescent Necklace, 18k yellow gold with Sleeping Beauty turquoise, 3½ x 2” (crescent), 18” (handmade adjustable chain)
“[This show has] the best of the best,” says Shanan Campbell, owner of Sorrel Sky Gallery. “Kevin Red Star, who is a legend and in the prime of his career, is creating a group of [new] works that will be unveiled.” Also in the exhibition, Campbell adds, are the “usual suspects” like Ray Tracey, Darryl Dean Begay, Victoria Adams, Mateo Romero, Cody Sanderson and more. “We have Jeanette Dale, a really incredible silversmith who works with some of the best turquoise you can find today, namely Bisbee turquoise. [New to the show is] Sylvana Apache who does pictorial bracelets and jewelry pendants and necklaces.”

Kevin Red Star (Crow), Three Friends Full Moon, acrylic and mixed media on canvas 20 x 24”

Victoria Adams (Southern Cheyenne), River and Whirlpool Earrings, 18k gold with sapphires, 3¼ x ½”
And yet another milestone this year, Campbell’s father, renowned jeweler Ben Nighthorse, will be turning 90 years old. “It’s so exciting what he’s working on. The collection is so beautiful and different from what we’ve seen from him. He’s 89, and the amount of creativity he has, it’s like he’s in his prime,” says Campbell. New works by Nighthorse will be showcased in the upcoming group show as well.

Ray Tracey (Navajo), Turquoise Inlay Cuff, sterling silver with Chinese turquoise and Sleeping Beauty turquoise, 1¼” (size 6½)
The exhibition takes place August 19 to 21, with an artist reception on opening day from 5 to 7:30 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, August 20 to 21, Sorrel Sky will create a market-like setting in which all exhibiting artists will be in attendance for collectors to meet and chat with. Campbell adds that Jackson Clark, respected Native American arts dealer and owner of Toh-Atin Gallery, will be giving a talk on Navajo weavings.
