Treasure Trove

The Great Southwestern Antique Show brings the public vintage and authentic items.

This summer sparks the onset of thrilling events and shows, and beginning August 6, Albuquerque’s 22nd annual Great Southwestern Antique Show will host more than 100 dealers. The show includes a variety of vintage, antique and authentic Native American, cowboy and Western items. After last year’s cancelation, show organizer’s anticipate high attendance, and attendees can expect a few surprises, such as some new antique dealers joining an already highly esteemed list.

“We’re really excited to get back to doing in-person shows,” says show manager Victoria Roberts. “It’s been a difficult year for a lot of people and our dealers are chomping at the bit to meet with buyers one-on-one again.”

Visitors at the 2019 Great Southwestern Antique Show.Show festivities begin Friday, August 6, for the Charity Sneak Preview, where ticket holders get a first look and an “early shopping experience,” beginning at 1 p.m. All proceeds go to the Albuquerque Community Foundation and benefits New Mexico PBS Arts & Education. Show owner, Terry Schurmeier, is “really involved with fundraising and giving to the community,” says Roberts. “She once organized funding for nurses to go to school, and then moved on to the PBS arts program. They focus on a lot of education and opportunities in New Mexico.”

This dedication and passion for giving back has culminated in a successful, long-running show with inspired dealers. Visitors can expect to find pieces such as a pair of Northern Plains beaded moccasins from Blue Heron Gallery, Hopi carvings from Buffalo Barry’s Indian Art and a Tlingit-painted drum from Taylor A. Dale Tribal Art, all from the early-20th century.

Other new and noteworthy exhibitors are Jeri Devers Lively with Cowgirl Up Trading, out of Crowley, Texas; Mark Leitch with Antiques Etc., from Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Travis MacSwain from Ormond, Florida, who has amassed a great collection over the years and is now looking to downsize and share his wonderful finds. Taylor A.
