On September 16, Hindman will host its first Cincinnati-based auction for Native American art. The sales were previously held under the Cowan’s brand for a decade. The September sale will mark the first Native American live auction under the Hindman brand.
The sale will be led by Danica Farnand, director and senior specialist of Native American, prehistoric and tribal art. “We may have a new logo at the top of the catalog, but the sale is still going to have the same great material we have always had,” Farnand says. “I am proud of the department we have built at Cowan’s and am excited for the new opportunities ahead under the Hindman name.”
Collection of early Navajo jewelry
The sale will include a number of rare items from tribes across North America in a wide range of collecting categories including basketry, pottery, textiles, beadwork, jewelry and more. Highlights include an early Algonquin effigy pipe (est. $30/40,000) that is carved of fine grain limestone and appears to be without precedent in the early protohistoric period. The human effigy sculpted in realistic portrait-like detail is among the most refined of human depictions from the Northeastern Woodlands, the auction house notes. The figure, wearing silver ball and drop earrings, suggests a mid-17th century dating.

A polychrome pottery olla by Martina Vigil and Florentino Montoya (est. $25/35,000) will also be offered. Additionally, a matched pair of late-19th century Cheyenne beaded hide possible bags (est. $10/15,000) that are sinew-sewn and beaded using colors of red white-heart, medium blue, greasy yellow, dark blue and white will also be offered.
