Santa Fe Art Auction’s annual American Indian + Tribal Arts — Classic to Contemporary will take place August 13 to 15. The sale is set to feature a large collection of historic items, primarily beadwork from Northern New Mexico. Bidders will be able to vie for coveted items in this offering including Plains moccasins, Sioux beaded pipe bags, beaded leggings and a beaded otter pelt bag.

A fine collection of historic and contemporary American Indian painting will also be a part of the upcoming sale, beginning with early artists of the Dorothy Dunn school such as Quincy Tahoma and Harrison Begay, to contemporary painters including Tony Abeyta, Sheldon Harvey, Marla Allison and David Bradley. “In 2019 we held an auction of the Patricia and Janis Broder Collection of early American Indian painting, and since then we have become the auction house for Native art,” says Gillian M. Blitch, Santa Fe Art Auction president and CEO. “And we feel this year will be no different, with quality historic and contemporary offerings of quality American Indian art.”

Another special component of August’s classic and contemporary American Indian sale is a special collection of Hopi canteens from an esteemed collector in New Mexico. The canteens, dating back to the 1880s, will number around 25 lots, with several coming from legendary Hopi potter Nampeyo and more from her family members. One canteen is an incredibly rare cylindrical clay Ashiwi that dates back to the 1700s, estimated at $20,000 to $30,000. A polychrome canteen by Nampeyo from around 1880 has a pre-sale estimate of $5,000 to $7,500.
