Expanded Offerings

The seventh annual Antique American Indian Art Show returns with its live exhibition and a new virtual show.

Last year when the pandemic began, art fair producers had to reevaluate their shows in real time to keep with the rapidly changing environment. Kim Martindale and John Morris, producers of four shows through Objects of Art LLC, had just finished a successful run of their San Francisco events in February 2020. The pair opted to put their August 2020 shows in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on hold.

These intricate Haudenosaunee (Seneca Iroquois) beaded purses, circa 1820 to 1850, will be available from Buffalo Tracks Gallery.

This year the events are back with live and online components that complement one another to make a complete art fair experience. The Antique American Indian Art Show Santa Fe will take place live at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe from August 17 to 20. A preview party benefitting Native Arts New Mexico happens opening day from 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets cost $35 and are good for the preview and the run of the show. Currently, because of local guidelines, the event is a preview only—sans refreshments—where collectors are able to make the first purchases. General admission runs August 18 to 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, for $15 per day or $25 for the full show.

Late 19th-century Zuni Shalako Kachina on offer by Alan Kessler Gallery.

This event, paired with Objects of Art Santa Fe held earlier in August, makes for a complete narrative of Native American art. The Antique American Indian Art Show focuses on historic objects including basketry, jewelry, textiles, kachinas, sculptures, pottery and more. On the show floor will be booths from several mainstay exhibitors including James Flurry, Art Blackburn, Terry deWald, John C. Hill Antique Indian Arts and Four Winds Gallery.

This pictorial beaded American Indian shirt, from Flury and Company Gallery, will be one of the pieces at the show.

“This show overlaps with Santa Fe’s world-famous Indian Market, which features contemporary work,” says Morris. “Having our historic material available for show-goers to see and buy, and for them to also be able to experience some of the best contemporary work at the Indian Market, makes Santa Fe the place to be in August if you’re interested in this material.”

According to Martindale, “The in-person show is smaller than we’ve had, but when you put the online and in-person show together, it’s a bigger event overall.” Some dealers will exhibit art both live and online, while others will be online-only exhibitors and a number will be exhibiting in Santa Fe only. The online event happens August 9 to 31, with a virtual benefit preview on August 9 from 1 to 7 p.m. for $25. Programming for The Antique American Indian Art Show will be available, so anyone who cannot attend in-person will have a complete experience of the fair.
