This year’s Sovereign Santa Fe, organized by FaraHNheight Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has many exciting endeavors in store, starting with an exhibition of contemporary Native American artworks. This dynamic show is curated by Tony Abeyta (Diné) and organized by gallery owner Gregory Farah and artist Randy L. Barton (Diné). Artists are also participating in the first-ever Sovereign Market Annex, where artists have been invited to sell their products and services at vending booths in and around the exhibit.
Brian A. Davidson (Diné), Beauty Trumps Pandemic, mixed media on canvas, 38 x 46”
“The whole platform is to promote contemporary Native art,” says Farah on the premise of the show. “[Contemporary Native art] is a constantly changing and evolving facet to tribal art in general. The show is where we can celebrate and show contemporary Native work.” In the spirit of change, some unconventional Native owned companies have been invited to sell at the Annex, including cosmetics and clothing companies.
Additional excitement involves the partnership with the exhibition and Pivot: Skateboard Deck Art, organized by Duane Koyawena (Hopi) and Landis Bahe (Diné) and featuring around 100 contemporary Native artworks painted on skateboards. Their hope is to inspire people in furthering their dreams and speaks to a “pivotal moment in Native American art.”
Patrick Collins (Ojibwe), Navajo MMIW, oil pastel with silver leaf, 40 x 14”
One of the highlights of the entire event will be a performance by the Native American women’s a cappella group famously known as Ulali. The band is reuniting after many years of retirement to honor the work of artist Patrick Collins (Ojibwe), who has painted several large panel portraits as part of a project with the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) organization. The portraits are of famous, prestigious and socially active, living Native women, all from different Indigenous backgrounds.
Maggie Carson (Choctaw), Woman with Animal Head St. 1, mixed media on cotton rag, 34 x 26”
This exhibition and event is not to be missed. Take note of artists such as Brian Davidson (Diné), who will be showing symbolic pieces such as Beauty Trumps Pandemic. Also look out for artists such as Jesse Littlebird (Laguna/Kewa Pueblos), Danielle SeeWalker (Lakota) and Maggie Carson (Choctaw), to name just a few. Join the festivities from August 16 through August 22.
