The Free Indian Market hosts 500 artists for its August show in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

On August 21 to 22, the Free Indian Market returns to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The event, a celebration of the artistic spirit that permeates throughout the region, is free to the public and free for the artists participating. As many as 500 artists, many of them award winners and highly respected in their catagories, are expected to be exhibiting their works at the Scottish Rite Temple and Federal Park across the street, just two blocks north of the Santa Fe Plaza. Between the two locations, the show will feature a massive three acres of exhibitors.San Ildefonso potter Barbara Gonzales will be signing her new book about her famous great-grandmother Maria Martinez, as well as exhibiting her latest pots at the Free Indian Market.

Photo courtesy of the artist.One of Free Indian Market's goals is to provide a safe place to view and buy art, so Covid safety guidelines will be followed throughout the event, including masks, and all participating artists have been vaccinated. Just a few of the many immensely talented artists who will be exhibiting works at this year’s market include Nanibaa Beck, Mike Bird Romero, Frances Abeita, Michele Tapia Browning, Jolene M. Bird, Glenda Loretto, Joe Baca, Franklin Peters and many more.

“I will be bringing my handmade fur-felt Haida art designed hats,” says Haida fashion designer Dorothy Grant. “[I will] also bring silk scarves, leather accessories, cell bags and evening bags. I will have a few couture garments, such as silk evening wear.”Jolene Bird (Kewa) with a large mosaic pot, which she has donated for the 2021 Free Indian Market Benefit Auction.

Ron Honyouti (Hopi) is a contemporary katsina carver who also works with various semi-precious stones. “I will have my miniature katsina carvings, carved bolos, inlaid stone earrings and pendants,” says the artist. “I was given the SWAIA fellowship award in 1985 and have garnered numerous awards throughout the years I participated, including several Best in Class, Best in Division and many first-place awards.”

A Benefit Silent Auction, which funds the development of the Free Indian Market, will be held as well.
