Market Report

We ask leading dealers of historic and contemporary Native American art what their thoughts are on the market and where it might be headed.

What a difference a year makes. Of course, at the beginning of the pandemic we were open, but then we quickly closed, strictly following government guidelines during the lockdowns. We then turned our attention to the internet, like so many businesses this past year. We had online shows, hosted Zoom events and made short YouTube videos of our artists. We also made a commitment to purchase from the artists so they could continue to make great art. We spent a lot of time talking to the artists, working closely with them discussing their needs, expectations and how to handle a rapidly changing business environment. We wanted to help create scenarios where they wouldn’t get overwhelmed by events, stay healthy and keep creating.

We were lucky because our online business was strong, so it wasn’t a big transition, and our customers were ready. As things started opening up again, it has become about communication with both clients and artists. It was important to let people know we were adhering to health guidelines, open by appointment and had implemented new procedural precautions with shipping. We added new layers and refined our business model to make everything work smoothly.

Now we’re open in New Mexico and Arizona, some of the things we were doing won’t go away because our customers liked them. I think the future is that brick-and-mortar galleries are here to stay. As much as Covid changed our lives, people still want to see art in person. They want to be immersed in a gallery experience. The clients who had to remain isolated during the pandemic have now expressed an interest in traveling again.

My expectation is that as things continue to improve Santa Fe will be a prime spot for travelers. They want the whole “experience” of visiting this area where they can meet the artists, experience the history and culture, have great food, immerse themselves in nature, and support the galleries and artists who believe in the art they are making.
