This is an exciting year for the Heard community as we prepare to host the 62nd annual Indian Fair & Market while celebrating the museum’s 90th year (1929–2019). It is serendipitous that the fair falls on International Women’s Day, March 8, given the valuable role of women in our history. From co-founder Maie Bartlett Heard to the first curator, Allie Walling BraMé, to the Ladies’ Auxiliary (now the co-ed Guild) to our all-female curatorial staff to the fair and museum artists, women have played, and continue to play, a vital role in the museum, the guild and the fair.
The Indian Fair & Market showcases the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary practices by more than 600 indigenous artists from across Indian Country, but especially those from the Southwest. Artists return each year to tell their stories from their perspectives through art, music and dance. Many also enter the juried competition to vie for cash prizes and, more importantly, the enhanced reputation that comes with winning a coveted Heard ribbon. Thanks to generous donors we expect to raise $74,050 for the largest prize pool in fair history. Join us at the Best of Show Awards Reception and Fashion Show on Friday evening to meet and congratulate the winning artists.
The fair is the signature event run by the Heard Museum Guild, the volunteer arm of the museum, and the largest annual event held at the museum with more than 10,000 guests from all over the world. More than 300 volunteers work each day serving breakfast and snacks and providing booth relief to the artists; assisting performers, storytellers and fairgoers; and taking care of all the behind-the-scenes details that make hospitality the byword of the event.
Museum admission is included in your fair ticket. Don’t miss David Hockney’s Yosemite and Masters of California Basketry, which honors the Yosemite Valley’s original Indigenous inhabitants and one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Fast forward from the 20th-century basket weavers, all female, to Maria Hupfield: Nine Years Towards the Sun, a solo exhibition featuring more than 40 works by the Canadian/Anishinaabek conceptual performance artist. This is the first in our newly established exhibition series of monographic shows for women and women identifying artists. We believe these exhibitions are an excellent complement to the art and artists participating in the fair.
Thank you for making the Indian Fair & Market a success and for your ongoing support.
See you at the fair!
